Gear Patrol – Gifts for Guys

Mountain Trek’s Adventure to Machu Picchu was the culminating gift in this 2012 Gift Guide for men by Gear Patrol.

Gear Patrol Annual Gift Guide for Guys

The fitness fanatic is the man that puts in a quick 5K before the rest of us have even tossed the beans in the burr grinder. His body fat is measured in fractions, and biceps in feet. His dinner conversations involve things like basal metabolic rate; his pecs flex, noticeably, when he passes the pepper. He has endless amounts of energy, a good work ethic, and an army of free weights hidden in his office.

He might be your best friend, or brother, or both. He may even be the man you want to become, or your better (slimmer) half. One thing is certain, though: trying to track down a gift that will release the right amount of endorphins can be as exhausting as training for an Ironman…

Peru Mountain Fitness Trek

You could reward your exercise efforts with a trip to the sun and sand, but the included mojitos and muy grande meals will lay waste(line) to all of your hard work. The Peruvian Mountain Fitness Trek is an eleven night hiking hiatus designed for fitness fanatics of all levels. Led by Mountain Trek’s head honcho, groups are small and broken out into equally paced pairings. Beginning in Cusco and touring through the Sacred Valley, the trek ascends the Andes via the Inca trail into the history and mystery that is Machu Picchu. A gift that truly embodies the spirit of adventure, this is an experience that should be on every man’s list. Just don’t forget your camera.

Abandon the Heels for a Heath Retreat

Cynthia Dial Alpine Lake

Cynthia Dial shares her health retreat vacation experience at Mountain Trek

Full disclosure:  I was a daily walker, not a hiker.

Give me a pair of Jimmy Choo’s with 4 ½ inch heels and the directive to cross Manhattan’s Midtown and consider it done.  But put me in a pair of hiking boots and I’m out of my element… would I be able to keep up, or would I be the “one” out of her league?

The bottom line is I needed a tune-up and was ready to graduate from morning walker to all-day hiker.  However, a statement on the spa’s site sealed the deal: “If you can climb four flights of stairs without stopping and walk on undulating ground for a minimum of two hours, you can do this program.” Sold.

Here, my friends, are the details…

Mountain Trek: The Transformation Vacation

Ready to hike into a whole new you?

Kokanee Trail “Got the Nordic poles? Check. First-Aid kit? Check. Bear spray? Yup….And we’re ready to go!” our hiking guide proclaims. “Do you mean ‘bug spray’?” I ask, with slight trepidation in my voice. “No, I meant ‘bear spray’….But don’t worry – it’s usually just a precaution”. And so, another group of urban professionals vacationing at Mountain Trek – a high-octane fitness resort nestled in southeastern B.C. – realize that we’re not in proverbial Kansas anymore. As we depart for a four-hour hike up an altitude heretofore seen only from the tops of office skyscrapers, we feel secure under the supervision of our fearless leader. Mountain Trek takes a refreshingly different approach to “dieting.”

Spa Magazine‘s Winter 2012 issue has a feature article on Mountain Trek! They’ve named us one of the 12 Great Weight-Loss Spas and showcased Mountain Trek in their boot camp coverage.

We were thrilled to have Liz Woodson the author of the article, visit us and participate in the program last summer and write about her experience.

Mountain Trek is one of the most personalized boot-camp experiences around, offering three guided groups at varying levels.

Mountain Trek Featured in Outside Magazine

outside magazine cover 2004ADVENTURE NEVER FELT SO GOOD

In January 2004, Outside Magazine featured Mountain Trek as one of “Ten North American spas that will recharge your mind, body, and soul“.

THE VIBE

With a staff-to-guest ratio of more than two to one (only 14 guests are allowed at a time), visitors to Mountain Trek, in southeastern B.C., are pampered like Sinatra in Vegas. But be warned: The staff’s main job isn’t performing chemical peels; it’s getting your butt out the door and up the surrounding Columbia, Selkirk, and Purcell mountains. And no wonder – Mountain Trek employs a Delta Force cadre of local guides who can’t wait to get out there every morning. In fact, these folks are so hardcore, they spend their precious days off … hiking. Guests can choose beginner, intermediate, or advanced hiking groups. (Advanced boot jockeys typically trek 12-plus miles per day over 4,000 feet of elevation gain.) After the day’s trek, spa-goers crash in a fully feng shui 8,000-square-foot cedar lodge located on a former fruit orchard along the banks of 90-mile-long Kootenay Lake. Though hiking is Mountain Trek’s raison d’être (notice “Trek” in the name), the resort periodically follows a different path, offering weight-loss retreats, supervised fasting regimens, and other specialized programs.

GUESTLIST

Energetic hikers and dieters looking to amp up their fitness program.

AWE FACTOR

Yoga and meditation on the beach of ice-blue Kootenay Lake, with the 11,000-foot Purcells as a backdrop.

TO-DIE-FOR TREATMENT

Forgo the standard three-massage-per-week package and pay $185 extra for the Zombie, an option that includes a decadent hour-long full-body Swedish massage every day.

MENU

Favorites of head chef Aaron Jeffs include tofu tarts with tomato, basil, and black olive, and banana-coconut raw-fruit flan.

HE-MAN RATING

Four grunts-six days of hardcore mountain hiking means you earn that daily rubdown.

Mountain Trek BC Featured in Zoomer Mag!

Zoomer Magazine Cover

“In the quest to drop a few pounds and take his fitness level to new heights, Bill Macpherson heads for the hills”.

He documents his experience at Mountain Trek’s British Columbia lodge in the March 2011 edition of Zoomer Mag. Here is an excerpt from the article, Making the Trek:

“We’re moving. Through sun-speckled forests of cedar and larch, our mobile line of colour wends its way high above blue Kootenay Lake, tucked in the southeast corner of B.C.”

“…thoughts of a blissful evening soak in the whirlpool at the lodge across the lake keep me moving forward, muscles burning. Welcome to a typical day at Mountain Trek.”

“It’s a cliché that people make the place, but a fitting one here. You’re in an isolated part of the world at a luxurious lodge. No radio, television, coffee, alcohol or tobacco intrude on healthy mountain air and relaxing therapy; the world slips away at day’s end. Comfortable robes, sweats and tees – all provided – are the typical attire. You can exercise, steam or sauna anytime of the day or night. End result? Wellness and camaraderie amoung the guests grows remarkably fast.”

“…by week’s end I am feeling renewed, have a bunch of new friends and am 10 pounds lighter. I’ve hiked some amazing trails and, yes, I’m sore but in a good way.”

A Mountain Trek Alumni Returns to Beautiful BC

In 2004, travel writer Cynthia Dial came to Mountain Trek in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. She returned in the fall of 2010 and documented her experience in TraveLife Magazine and JustLuxe.com.

“With a six-year-older body and a metabolism 2,190 days closer to its expiration date (yes, I multiplied), I had doubts. Would a similar routine have similar results? Moreover, would this older version of me be physically amenable to the rigorous routine?

Thus, I decided to compare the visits – divulging the whole truth and nothing but the truth…”

Mountain Trek “Extraordinary Adventure Bootcamp” Says Tatler

Tatler Magazine Features Mountain TrekTatler Spa Guide 2011 has chosen Mountain Trek as one of the top 101 spas in the world. They recognize that “with everyone’s crazy, unhealthy lives, the spa break is no longer an indulgence but a necessity”. Mountain Trek is featured in the Lithe Spirit category, which is apt description as you go home feeling lighter in body and years.
All the images of Canada in your mind’s eye are here – pine, birch and maple trees, huge glassy lakes, wandering deer, elk, moose and bears, sensational colours and a huge timber lodge that holds no more than 16 guests. You can enjoy the rainforest and canyons of one of the most extraordinary adventure bootcamps out there.

Days start with smoothies and sunrise yoga, followed by breakfast and then a challenging but perfectly paced four-hour hike using Nordic poles. Reach the top of a mountain with your head almost in the clouds; stand in the thick of the forest and look up at a canopy of trees more than 1,800 years old.
Then it’s back to the lodge for serious-but-not-sanctimonious nutrition and health talks, supper, a massage, cardio, resistance training and a steam. Phew. Use the infrared sauna every day – you can burn up to 600 calories in 30 minutes. This, combined with the hiking, ensures the pounds fall off, but it’s the whole new perspective on life in general that hooks people. Come back for the post-Christmas ‘Turkey Burner’ week.– Tatler Spa Guide 2011, November 2010
